"Learning another language is like becoming another person" - Huraki Murakami
During the two years of French AB, I had the opportinity to not only learn a third language, but also learn what is a language. As I've learned, we take languages for granted, in my case both spanish and english. As I was born speaking spanish and five years after english, at this point, I didn't fully understand but only spoke. During this course I learned grammar, pronuntiation, but also culture. Which is a key component of language. You can not speak a language if you don't know nor understand the culture. |

REPORTAGE TOURISTIQUEIB CHARACTERISTIC: THINKER
For this project, we did a video in which we did a touristic guide for a french visitor. We needed to only to express in french but also communicate Mexican culture in french. In this project, I demonstrate the characteristic of a thinker, as it's no easy task to communicate Mexican culture in french. Moreover, this project was a challenge as I needed to use vocabulary and verbs that were new to me, yet I had sufficient knowledge to do so. Thinker within this project can be seen as problem-solving skills, which we used as the video was recorded during COVID times, thus, we needed to plan ahead for it to happen. One of the most challenging parts was moving around the city in COVID times. As I mentioned, we planned ahead and did our research about the places and what we wanted to say, helping us be less time outside. Another one was the video production, as I enjoyed it however I had never done a project like this, thus, I didn't know what I was doing. Yet, the result was incredible and we had fun doing it. One of the main takeaways I had from this project were the skills I had to speak, even though I'm still working on the pronunciation, I was amazed by how much French we were able to speak. Also, improvising the dialogue only based on bullet points was another thing I thought I wasn't able to do, yet, I did. |
ORAL ASSESMENTIB CHARACTERISTIC: KNOWLEDGABLE
As part of the IB curriculum, the internal assessment evaluates the oral component. For this, we're expected to describe an image (1-2 minutes) and relate it to one of the six themes we saw in class. Then, a follow-up discussion came (8 minutes), where I demonstrated my fluency and understanding. I decided to choose this piece of work as it was a complete challenge personally for me. Speaking in public makes me nervous, even more, when speaking my third language. This work demonstrates self-trust, as it was all about that. Yet, by being knowledgeable, I was able to achieve a very good result. This assessment was challenging as I needed to trust myself, which is something I’m not used to. However, at the moment I began describing the image, the vocabulary appeared at my tongue, ideas turned crystal clear, and I was able to speak as I never did. I'm really proud of how I was able to control and use the nervous feelings to my advantage. The main takeaway from this assessment was acknowledging my knowledge. I will always be grateful for this as it's something I don’t usually think of, yet, after this, I'm very conscious about it. By acknowledging this, I can also knowledge what I don't know, which in the future will be the inspiration for learning more. |

C'EST MOIIB CHARACTERISTIC: COMMUNICATORS
In this project, we needed to present ourselves to the rest of the class. This was the very first time we needed to speak french out loud to the whole class and most importantly, use the correct verb conjugations. I decided to choose this piece of work it's one of the most memorable for me, as it marks the beginning of something big for me. Even though the assignment itself was easy at a glance, it was a total challenge for someone who just started speaking a new language to accomplish something like this. I felt really proud of my work, even though the evidence only was the guiding presentation, I was amazed at myself and how much I learned in a short period of time. I learned that I'm capable of doing it if I propose to do it. Everything is accomplishable, yet you need to want it. In my case, since my mom speaks French, I wanted to learn it to be able to speak with her. During this project, I was also able to feel reassurance that I took a good decision by choosing this class. For sure this assignment will help in the future as it demonstrates my capabilities, but also how satisfying is to learn something new. Even if it's something difficult, it's not impossible, therefore I learned I should always go for it. |
