ABOUT THE CLASS
"The beginning of knowledge is the discovery of something we do not understand" - Frank Herbert
What is knowledge? That's the first question we were asked at the beginning of the course, yet, I still don't know the answer. Theory of Knowledge (ToK) is one of the core components of the IB. During the two years, I questioned myself by asking if I knew or not, we saw the ways in which we know (WoKs) and the areas of knowledge (AOK). This taught me many things, however, the main takeaway I have is that we will never know everything, yet, we should use that as inspiration to be curious. |

TROLLY PROBLEMIB CHARACTERISTIC RISK-TAKER
For this assignment, we were asked to watch a lecture and then answer follow-up questions regarding the famous Trolley Problem. In the problem, we have to either decide if we save one person or five. We needed to explain our reasoning with the follow-up questions. As we saw in class reason is one of the ways of knowing, yet, we were exploring what is reason. I chose this piece of work because as it perfectly describes a risk-taker. This piece of work was based upon uncertainty; if something is right or wrong. Which made me approach it with forethought. Also, even though the problem uses reason, there are other underlying thought processes, such as emotion and intuition. Which made it even harder as I questioned myself if we should use them or not, this was the first assignment that really changed my perspective. The most challenging aspect of this assignment was understanding the meaning of the concepts of right and wrong. Which I thought I knew, yet, that wasn't true. I felt frustrated by this as I lost all sense of knowledge. However, with the help of the lecture and some analytical thinking, I was able to explore myself. We can try to guess however the meaning of the concepts but when seen from another perspective, historical context, or society, it might not be the same. This assignment taught me that we should take all problems with forethought. There's no right or wrong answer, only optimal answers based upon the circumstances. I will certainly use this lesson throughout my career and life, as life is full of problems, but seeing the bigger picture, this can also be extrapolated to the subject of ToK. We shouldn't be afraid of learning or knowing, we should be open-minded to change what we think we know and be open to understanding what we don't know. All ways of knowing may act upon each other, therefore we should look to the specific situation and see the optimal way of knowing we should use. |
